Green Pioneer Shifts from Offsetting to Retirement
_______________________________________________________________
12th November London – The GREEN AWARDS™ for creativity in sustainability has shifted from carbon offsetting to carbon retirement as part of its efforts to deliver a sustainable awards ceremony.
Carbon Retirement, an innovative start-up company, has offset the unavoidable emissions from the Green Awards by buying pollution permits needed by heavy industry and permanently taking them out of circulation. This means that rather than buying permits and continuing to pollute, industrial companies have to reduce their emissions.
Iain Patton, Managing Partner of GREEN Consultancy, producers and founders of the event, said, “We have tried to reduce the carbon footprint of the event through careful sourcing of food and drink, use of low energy lights and avoidance of waste. We are really pleased that Carbon Retirement is helping us to reduce the impact of the event even further.”
Carbon Retirement has also decided to support the Green Awards by sponsoring the Best CSR Report category, reflecting a continuing commitment to promoting clear and transparent communications.
Carbon Retirement Director, Jane Burston, commented, “We’re delighted to sponsor the ‘Best CSR Report’ Award. Effective CSR reports are crucial for engaging stakeholders in the sustainability agenda. We recognise the importance of being clear and transparent – in fact Carbon Retirement itself was launched in response to the need for an offsetting organisation that reflects these values. It’s great to see so many companies getting creative with their CSR reports and really taking the opportunity to get people involved.”
The Best CSR Report Award sets out to recognise clear and concise information that demonstrates transparency in communicating sustainability achievements. The judges were looking for outstanding creativity in the presentation of the report and the ability to make a real impact as well as examples of sustainable production and innovation in the format. Most of all they wanted to see evidence of thought leadership and an illustration of how sustainability is embedded in the organisation.
The winners of this year’s Green Awards will be announced on Wednesday 18th November at the LSO St Luke’s in Central London. See www.greenawards.co.uk for details.

Green Awards™ 2009 Shortlist Announced!
_____________________________________________________________________________
15th October 2009 London – Following three days of intense deliberation by the judging panel, the Green Awards™ 2009 is pleased to announce this year’s shortlist across 16 categories. The winners will be announced at the 4th annual Green Awards™ ceremony on 18th November.
The shortlisted work ranged from the informative to the amusing, with entries being selected from a competitive pool for the clarity of their message, creativity of expression and their sustainability rationale.
The hot topic throughout was whether companies could be accused of ‘Greenwash’ or were in fact truly living their values by providing both qualitative and quantitative evidence of the positive sustainable impact of their campaigns.
Dr Peter White, Director of Global Sustainability, P & G and Chair of the UK judging panel, said: “This year’s Green Awards will recognise excellence in sustainability communications from organisations large and small, public and private, and from home and abroad.”
“The entrants demonstrated the innovation and creativity needed to communicate sustainability, even during the current financial downturn. The diversity and creativity of the entrants resulted in much discussion on the judging panel to select the final and worthy winners.”
