Satinder Bindra is the Director of the Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) based at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi. He brings twenty one years of knowledge and experience in international communications.
Prior to his appointment, Satinder was a Special Correspondent for CBS San Francisco for whom he traveled globally and analyzed international news events. He also worked with the USA's leading media think tank - the Paley Center for the Media - where he organized global conferences for media CEO's and guided the Center on issues shaping the future of journalism. Concurrently he produced investigative films focusing on conservation issues as an independent documentary filmmaker.
From 1999 to 2007, Satinder worked as a Senior International Correspondent/South Asia Bureau Chief for CNN New Delhi, India. He covered breaking news, filed documentaries, investigative reports, CNN.com stories and hosted half hour specials from eight South Asian countries. He was awarded the duPont Award for being CNN's lead correspondent during the 2004 Tsunami and was honored as 2007's `Best International Correspondent' by one of India's leading business schools. He also won the SAJA (South Asian Journalist Association) Award in New York for news coverage a record five times.
Earlier in his career he worked as a Senior Reporter at Vancouver Television (Vancouver, Canada), Correspondent/Reporter/Producer at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Toronto, Canada), Reporter/Editorial Assistant at The Canadian Press (Toronto, Canada), and as a Reporter with India Abroad News Service (London, England).
Satinder holds a M.Phil in International Relations (Oxford University), MA in Economic History (St. Stephen's College, Delhi University), and a BA in History (St. Stephen's College, Delhi University).
He is fluent in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.
