Jules Peck
Policy Advisor, Quality of Life Commission
"The challenge of moving from low to zero carbon and then a restorative decarbon equity based wellbeing economy will rely far more on culture change than technofix. The communication of sustainability and wellbeing visions by brands will need to play a key role in the societal shift from consumer to citizen on which success will rely."
Jules is a freelance writer and citizen with over 20 years’ experience as an adviser to senior corporate executives, politicians and NGOs.
During 2006 and 2007 Jules was Director of the Quality of Life (QOL) Commission advising the Conservative Party on environment and wellbeing issues. The QOL report Blueprint for a Green Economy was described by the Guardian as “both serious and - not always the case with other reviews – coherent. …It seeks to answer a question posed explicitly in the report: ‘What would a low-carbon British economy look like, and how do we get there?’" Worldchaning.com said the report was “groundbreaking, indeed, yes, world-changing political work”.
The Times said of the report “An extraordinary policy document on the environment grandly related human happiness to the present and future state of the planet”. Philosopher Alain De Botton said “…an exceptionally well-written, humane, thought-provoking and generous piece of work. It's the sort of thing that reminds one what politics could and should be. The style of thinking is brilliantly focused and delivered in an admirably clear prose.”
Since then Jules has been working on a wiki book www.citizenrenaissance.com of which Campaign Magazine has said “If you’re looking to sound clever whilst you talk about the future of marketing, its a mine of ideas on social change, attitudes to consumerism and the role of business”. Matthew Taylor, CEO of the RSA, has said of it “Marketing guru Jules Peck and Robert Phillips recently sent out the e-draft of their book Citizen Renaissance – a clarion call for a sustainable wellbeing economy”. Zac Goldsmith has said “Citizen Renaissance is a groundbreaking piece of work which opens up new chapters in the environmental and quality of life debate.” Citizen Renaissance is soon to also be the focus of a Demos pamphlet.
Jules is also; a keen participant in Transition Towns, Chair of the Bulmer Foundation, a Trustee and Board member of a number of other charities including One World Wildlife, Anti-Apathy, and Bristol Food Hub, a non-executive Director of Original Fairtrade Music and Media, an adviser to Edelman UK, www.38degrees.org.uk and http://www.dothegreenthing.com/, a judge of the Green Awards and Sustained Dandelion Fairtrade Enterprise Awards.
Jules is a regular public speaker and has published numerous articles, papers and reports on wellbeing and environment issues, including most recently www.citizenrenaissance.com, ‘Hope and Glory’ - a report on Venture Capital and sustainability, ‘Blueprint for a Green Economy’ - advising the Conservative Party and ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ on the commercial potential of ‘responsible’ mainstream brands.
And next Jules is a co-founder of a new strategic sustainability consultancy called Abundancy Partners, launching Nov 2009.
