The packaging entry from 02 summed up all that was best in the Green Awards. Here was a household name, a multinational corporation, showing a real commitment to sustainable practice. Their packaging had been redesigned to encourage customers who didn’t need a charger to opt out of receiving a new one when they upgraded their phone - this had a multiple knock-on effect, allowing phones to be posted through letter boxes (reducing courier deliveries), giving customers the option of having a tree planted in their name and offering a simple way to recycle their current phone. This wasn’t tokenism, or a worthy gesture with no real substance; it encouraged change not only from 02’s customers, but also from their competitors.
