Best Green New Media Award

Sponsored by ASDA

As the country's lowest priced supermarket retailer for the past 12 years we know that price is fundamental to our customers to help them feed their families. That’s why we reject the view that you need to be rich to live sustainably. All of our sustainability plans move closer towards our aim of 'making sustainability affordable for all'.

By saving money through becoming more sustainable, we can lower prices for our customers, ensuring our prices remain competitive while reducing the pressure on disposable incomes faced by millions of our shoppers, particularly during the current recession.

In 2009 we accelerated progress with an innovative Carbon Management Plan to holistically link and embed sustainability into every area of our operations, becoming the first and only major retailer to target a fixed carbon reduction in a calendar year.

Our target is to eliminate 100,000 tCO2e in 2009 whilst saving £25.1m.  Linking sustainability to cost savings is essential during the recession and we hope will act as a beacon to others that still, wrongly, view sustainability as a cost not an opportunity.
