Best Green Packaging Award

Sponsored by Tesco

At Tesco we have a unique opportunity to use our relationships with over 30 million customers and the 5000 businesses in our supply chain to mobilise collective action to protect the climate.

Our programme has three fronts:

•  Setting an example: We have set challenging global targets to reduce new building and fleet emissions by 50% by 2020 and 2012, committing £500m to reduce our energy use. We measure and publish our direct carbon footprint through the Carbon Disclosure Project and in our CR report to inform our stakeholders. We use the footprint to set       challenging targets to reduce emissions from our operations. In 2007/08 our footprint was 4.47mtCO2e for the whole Group and 2.3mtCO2e for the UK. We are in the process of  measuring our 08/09 footprint. We have created an Environmental Blueprint from which our new stores in the UK will now be built, resulting in the opening of our sixth       environmental store at Cheetham Hill which generates a carbon footprint 70% lower than an equivalent store.

•  Working with others: We are working with suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain. This is backed by our £100 million Sustainable Technology Fund to support large-scale carbon reduction technologies in our store, distribution centres and supply chain worldwide. We established the £25m Sustainable Consumption Institute at Manchester University pledging to make the findings widely available. We have pledged to reduce packaging across our supply chain by 25% by 2010.

•  Empowering customers: We are making it easy for our customers to reduce their carbon footprint by making low-carbon choices affordable; by providing information; and by showing that their actions make a difference and offering rewards for green choices.  We have helped our customers to reduce carrier bag usage by 50% - over 3bn bags saved. We have introduced a Greener Living brand and increased green product sales by over 50%. We have launched carbon labelling on products to help customers understand the environmental impact of the purchases, leading the industry in this area.

“The challenge of creating a low-carbon society will require a revolution in thought and action – a revolution in green consumption. This is where Tesco can make a huge contribution.”
Sir Terry Leahy, Chief Executive, Tesco
